Protecting The Environment From Industial Waste

Industrial processes are usually messy, and mitigation systems are often needed to protect health and the environment from industrial waste. Whether the danger is from chemical or particulate sources, a system must be devised to reduce or eliminate dangerous emissions and meet pollution control standards. The problem for businesses that need to protect against these dangers is that there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution to dealing with industrial waste. Businesses that find themselves needing mitigation services usually need custom manufactured solutions, and that’s where AT Industries Industrial Sheet Metal steps in to help.

Expanding Challenges

A Kansas City-area manufacturer that creates large numbers of wooden gunstocks was expanding, and with expansion came an extra set of challenges. The high-capacity nature of the production operation necessitates the use of automation, and with fast machines handling the manufacturing, there are few errors, rapid output and extremely predictable operating expenses. But with rapid output also comes the rapid generation of waste.

Airborne Particles

In this case, the dangerous waste was the dust and fine powder being generated by the automated system’s rapid wood cutting. While not toxic or chemically dangerous, the wood particulates being created where small enough and being thrown with enough energy to become airborne. Large airborne particulates like this can cause severe irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, can trigger allergic reactions, and may even cause cancer.

Custom Components

In order to create a safe work environment while maintaining high-capacity production, the company elected to install a custom dust removal system designed to specifically remove the dust particles from the air. In order to build this system into the space where it needed to be installed, however, required that custom components be developed.

Partnership

Paper and Dust Pros hired AT Industries to manufacture the metal parts that it had designed to manage the dust for the gunstock producer. One of AT’s specialties is working with other companies toward a common goal, and this job was a perfect example of our partnership capacities. Paper and Dust Pros were the engineers on the project, and AT Industries served as the fabricator, delivering exactly what was specified and, later, custom built.

Completion Time

After bidding the project and receiving the order, AT’s team of fabricators went to work creating the needed components. The entire project took a team of 4 skilled union metalworkers approximately a month to complete.
